See the fabric & supplies requirements chart among the pictures on this page.
YOU WILL NEED:
- Exterior fabric: Woven fabric, medium to heavy weight (approx. 200-400 gr/m2), for example quilt, fake fur, teddy, corduroy, softshell, canvas, denim. Preferably a soft fabric.
- Lining fabric: Woven fabric in light weight (approx. 100-200 gr/m2), for example cotton, viscose, polyester.
- Optional: Interlining for the exterior fabric. I recommend a soft interlining that will give some volume. For example Vlieseline H630 and H640, they are fusible. I personally don’t use heavy interlinings for this bag, since I prefer it with a soft look. But you can use a more stable interlining (such as S320 or Style-Vil) if that’s what you’re going for.
- Optional: Interlining for the lining. Not required at all, but if you do want to give the lining fabric some stability, use Vlieseline H200 or G700. They are light, soft and fusible.
- Webbing / bag strap: approx. 1,3 meters (52”), with the width 38 mm (1.5”). (If you’d rather sew your own bag strap I’ll show you how to in the step by step instructions. You will then need 120 cm (48”) fabric, avoid heavy fabrics).
- 1 zipper for the bag’s large opening. Choose #5, which has a total width of 32 mm. See length in the table on the previous page. Note: zippers are measured from their top stop down to their lower stop. If you use a zipper by the yard, remember to also buy the zipper pull.
- 2 D-rings, 38 mm (1.5”) wide.
- 2 swivel hooks, 38 mm (1.5”) wide.
- 1 slider buckle, 38 mm (1.5”) wide.
FOR THE POCKETS, YOU WILL NEED:
- For a zipper pocket: 1 zipper, see length in the fabric requirements chart (among pictures).
- For elasticated pocket: 1 elastic band, width: 6-10 mm (1/4” - 3/8”) wide. Length: 35 cm (13.8”) for size M, and 46 cm (18”) for size L.
- For a simple pocket with snap buttons: 1-2 snap buttons, and a PRYM plier or other tool to attach the snaps. Also a piece of interfacing to stabilize the fabric around the button.
USEFUL TO HAVE:
- Thread: for bag making you can sew with regular polyester thread. But if your fabric is very heavy and you want your bag to be extra tear-resistant, you can choose “extra strong” thread, no. 40 (2). Make sure to also use a larger size needle: 100-110. You can use regular thread in the bobbin.
- Zipper foot, for the sewing machine. It helps you sew close to the zipper.
- Aqua glue marker, quilt ruler, fabric scissors, pins/clips, and a sewing machine with a suitable needle for your fabric. Use a universal or microtex needle, size 80-90 for regular fabrics. Be prepared to use a heavier needle (universal or denim needle size 100-110) for heavy seams.
